David J. Schenck, supported by impeached Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will replace Presiding Judge Sharon Keller as the senior judge of Texas’s highest criminal court, the Court of Criminal Appeals. The Attorney General is a defendant in a felony case to be tried in Houston. Paxton-supported candidates Gina Parker and Lee Finley will supplant Barbara Parker Hervey and Michelle Slaughter, respectively. These Republican candidates are, as a practical matter, the likely new judges that will be elected in November. Paxton said that he opposed the CCA’s decision that the Texas Constitution reposes the power of prosecution in county and district attorneys, even in voting cases.

In a Republican primary race in which there was no Democratic candidate, Kent Chambers outpolled Kenna Seiler to be the replacement for retiring Beaumont Ninth Court of Appeals Justice Hollis Horton.
